if you know what that means then you know about Edgewater & Lake Erie. The next two hotspots i know of are Findley State Park, Upground Res, Wellington Ohio. And everyone already knows Pymatuning. Catfish - Sandusky Bay hang around the center area of the Big bay bridge, drop down some tastey looking rubber grapes from moms old fake fruit basket, or some left over steak grizzle on a huge steel 3" hook, no sinker needed, just make sure you have 100lb test line and a boat crank handy, it will feel like you will need them when you start to haul some of those beasts in forget the net call in the crane company. also yes good old fashioned hotdogs, chicken livers, cheese baits, doughballs, stink baits , worms, crayfish, shrimp, fake salmon eggs, pork rind, minnows, leeches, crickets, grasshoppers, fake tadpoles, whole kernel corn, and many more all work well- ok so they'll eat darn near the whole store if you let them but it goes to show they like alot of foods.

Hey Merlin, I am from Cleveland, also! I agree, CLEVELAND DOES ROCK!!!!!!! I frequelently fish at Edgewater. I also frequently fish the old bay bridge on Sandusky Bay for cats. You are right, they can get big and they certainly are very strong! I use nightcrawlers for them.
Some other places I like to fish are Hinckley Lake, and the mighty Cuyahoga River.(it's much cleaner now than it used to be). I catch a lot of smallies in it.

[This message has been edited by Andy Posta (edited 03-01-2001).]

Yes, I do have some tips for you for Hinckley. For bass, go to the end opposite the dam and fish the lilly pads with a carolina riged lizard. For crappie, go near the dam and use small jigs. The best time of year is early May. For cats, pretty much any part of the lake is good. The best bait is dip bait, but nightcrawlers also work. Good Luck!
P.S. Have you ever fished at Wildwood Marina on Lake Erie?

" On The ROCKS.... Fishing all night at Edgewater, warm air breeze, from the South-East, you have a lantern, a ton of food, beverages, folding lawnchair recliner, worms from your yard, the basic handme down from the ol' man reel and pole, usually a old zebco 303, 202, 505 if you were lucky,, while the Ol' Man had his shiny chrome "Zebco 33" that would cast a mile, as he would say,..now fishing at Edgewater is a sport all its own,,,first you cast out, way way way out,, if you can,&,hope you get your sinker and hook back,,thats how it is,,sooner or later one of those casts its goona happen,, i wish there were a scuba team standing by just to undo your sinker and hook from the rocks out there,(wishfull thinking). Well Edgewater has changed alot since the 70's, when this memory tookplace,,but thats still the scene down there now especially over by the Water Plant,,every night all summer long, driving west on I-90 you see it all lit up with lanterns,,,last year i got a moment to drop a line & and all i caught were these bait stealing lil GOBY,,,suprise my favorite local catfish holes are taken over by these lil freaks of nature,,,i thought catching a sheephead or carp was a bad night at Edgewater,, now its hit an all time low..."GO-BEE" as its pronounced,, is the bad word of the day to a edgewater fisherman that grew up with catching big catfish from sitting "ON THE ROCKS"

aaaahh...the good old days... I've only been fishing at Edgewater at night a few times, but I think that I will definately like to do it mire often. I know what you mean with the snags. I think they're from the old pier. I also know what you mean about the gobies. They are EVERYWHERE!!!!,Edgewater, Wildwood, Marblehead, 3 miles out on the Linda Mae... I did catch a 7 incher,though...the smallies are starting to eat them and they are biting tubes at Edgewater. Throw it around the base of the old pier and hang on!! Am I the only one who actually likes to catch carp and sheephead around here???????Well, hopefully I can get out for some steelies this weekend... Can't wait till spring, though...
Did you see the article on Pymatuning on pg. 33 of the March issue?
Did you see the story on pg. 122 by Joel Vance? It was a good story, but I have one question, since when is Conneaut 20 mins. from Downtown Cleveland?

Yeppers i've read them both,,
while it was snowing these past few days.
cleveland ohio weather,, dont like it?
wait 5 minutes it will change.
And nothing is 20 minutes away from downtown cleveland,, it takes that long just to get 5 feet on I-90 especially durring rush hour around here.
As for the carp & sheephead, i give those away if any one wants them nearby when i reel one in. Catfish, walleye & bass are my favorites.
Perch are ok if you have enough to clean.
I fillet butterfly style, no waste, no bones.
anything left over is catfish bait or garden fertilizer.
White Bass (Stripers)- use the top water plug with a silver, pink or green fly. Cast to where the birds are circling and diving on the water,, the minnows are there,, white bass, perch and walleye are near.
WALLEYE - LAKE ERIE - ERIE DEARIE lure.
light blue on overcast days.
white on sunny days.
also the Hilldebrandt Golden Nugget lure.
its all gold with two spinners.
Jumbo King Perch - use a panfish leader, two hooks minnow on top worm on bottom.
see which they are hitting on and run that on both hooks.
if they are running good, reeling in two fish hooked at once is NOT uncommon. Large Mouth Bass- Findley State Park. Jitterbug @ 4am.
Small Mouth Bass - Upground Res.- Wellington Ohio i use a silver & gold spinner fly combo.
once in a while i like to take lures i have and mix them up, put fly's on spinners, or wigglers and bubblers on prop spinners, even a spoon with a spinner has worked. i have no idea how orthodoxed this is but when theres nothing else to do but experiment with what you have and it works, why stop.?
CATFISH - ANYTHING, anytime , anywhere, if its on a hook it will find its way to a cats belly.
GOBEY- LAKE ERIE- 2 or 3 sticks of dynamite should do it. can we use those for bait? i bet even a catfish wouldnt eat one of those.
at least one with good taste,,

This weather is pretty weird. Sometimes it's like your in Florida, and sometimes it's like your on the North Pole! I agree, catfish, walleye, bass, and perch are my favorite, too, but it is fun just to catch a really hard fighter likt a sheephead or carp sometimes. For White Bass, I like to use an agitator with a Rooster Tail about 2 and a half behind it. Walleye, I agree, Erie Dearies are very good. That rig that you mentioned for Perch is exactly what I use, unless I'm on a boat, then I use a spreader. Never tried Finley State Park, or Upground Res.,but I was hoping to try Finley this year.
I don't know if you read the Plain Dealer, but if you do, then did you see the Outdoors section? There is a very good article on many local lakes that are often overlooked. I also agree with you for catfish, just about anything works if they're hungry.
The gobies-I've caught bass(largemouth, and smallies),walleye, and perch that have thrown them up, so other fish are starting to eat them.

Findley is great, especially if you have a row boat, just dont do what i did the first time out there the day i scored this ol' sportfisher 12 rowboat,, i fished that whole lake, all 93 acres in one hot day,, talk about a migrane of all head splitters, sun baked fisherman, then took everyone out for their own ride of the lake, i should have had arms as big as "Arnold" or HOGAN" by the end of that day, but instead i wound up darn near killing myself and didnt know it, totally fried like an old french fry in the McDonalds fryer from last week kinda fried.
Needless to say i got rid of the boat after a few years and now im missing it bad, Have huge urge to do some relaxing floating, letting the breeze be your trolling motor kicked back with a line and hook just out there and no phone or computers, or people showing up with totally wasted systems needing it repaired like yesterday,...
(ok a cell phone for emergencies) or to call up the bro's that arent there fishing with you to rub it in,,,

Thanks for the tip on Finley. What are the fish that are in there? I have heard that it is a lot like Hinckley. Went fishing today in a small poind near me and caught 9 bluegills. All near 1 lb. This weekend, I am finally going to go steelheading. It will probably be very crowded, though.
Good luck,Talk to ya soon

ive caught bluegill, small mouth bass, large mouth bass, bullheads and channel cats.
there are lots of turtles there too, snapping turtles will nail your stringer of fish if its in the water. I learned this one night fishing, i had 6 on the stringer then it came time for me to leave, i pull up 6 heads, everything else up to the skull, and up under it had been removed,.. A bucket or livewell is best.

What have you found are the best baits for the Catfish and bullheads? My favories are DIP BAIT and nightcrawlers. I also have had bad experiences with snappers. I have caught more than I can remember, and they have eaten a few fish off of my stringer, too. Have you been out to the lake yet? I haven't but I have heard about people that have had some catches of cats, and Walleyes around Sandusky.

OK Amigo, this is the overall true best results bait for cats.
Greasy,Oily Fat grizzle from beef or pork.
I only tip a hook with a worm or leech for when i want to make for some action on the bait.
No unfortunatly i haven't been able to wet a line yet this year, hope those who are out already are trying some of the baits we mentioned, most likely i will be around the water on the full moon of april when i get to go. I've never heard of that one for cats, but I guess they will eat just about anything when they're hungry. I know what you mean about that rod and reel. All of those fish grow very large around here and are very hard fighters. Good luck on your first fishing outing this year.
Tight lines and GO TRIBE!!(season operner is 18 days away!!)
Can't wait!!
P.S. Are you going to go to the sportsman's show?

i dont go to shows, everytime i do i wind up teaching them how its done.
clueless,, just sell , sell sell, is all they know.,, garbage kiddie lures, recycled metal hooks, used junk. overpriced junk.
i feel sorry for those fish in the tanks they try to hook all day, with the same old junk. it seemed to me all those dudes do is drive around telling you how good they fish, with this lure or that,, BULL.if it was so good then why are they standing around talking and not out fishing,,that tells me the whole story.

I normally don't go to them either, but since the weather is going to be a little too cold for me to go to the parade, I might check it out. I've never been to one before, so I may go. Went to my favorite spring steelhead hole today, but couldn't fish because there were so many other people there! WOW!! I've never seen that many people in that spot! Well, I can't wait until Sunday when I'm going to try again.Tight lines Talk to ya later.

Ive been told not rain hail sleet or snow will stop the mail or a fisherman.
I have hooked and landed a snapping turtle but gave it away, not knowing if i really wanted to actually try to eat one,
it seemed to me anything that i cant butterfly fillet isnt something i want to eat. If i land another huge one and someone wants it, cool by me,,,,as long as it's not munching on my stringer of fish im happy.

Andy,
Thanks for the info! I will give it a try. No, I haven't fished Wildwood Arena. Pretty good fishing? I don't have a boat, and now don't know anyone who does, so I'm relegated to ponds and shore fishing. But, it's better than nothing! Good Fishing.

Lunkrhuntr your welcome, and good luck. Yes, there is great fishing at Wildwood Marina. Both from shore and from boat. Most of my fishing is done from the breakwall there, but there is a cheap charter boat that runs out of there called the Linda Mae. I don't remember the exact price, but I think it was something like $30.(if you're interested, e-mail me for their phone number.) The fishing off there is great!!Good Luck!
Merlin, your right, normally none of that will stop a fisherman, but when your not talkin about fishing, it might. I've never actually landed a snapper because when it gets close enough for me to tell its not some world record, I cut the line. I don't want to risk losing a couple of fingers for a $2 lure! Went back to my steelhead spot today. Wasn't as crowded, but I still only had 2 on and landed one 6 pounder.Tight Lines and Talk to ya later
